It worked for Lombardi in the sports world, but does it apply to businesses in today’s digital landscape?
You bet. In business circles, you’re more likely to hear “consulting” or “strategy.” But at Digital Communications Group, we’re not only on board with the concept of coaching, it has become our favorite part of the job.
In our eyes, coaching is a two-way street. We come to the table with our experience, clients come to the table with their questions. But then this magic happens and we all learn something.

Whether you’re 10 years into owning a business or simply starting out, keeping up with today’s digital landscape and effectively promoting yourself can be difficult. Even as digital communications and content specialists, there’s times we deal with it, too. Should you do Google ads? Does your website need a refresh (after all, your cousin did set it up for you for free, but that was seven years ago, right?). How do you get your business or event covered by local media? Should you take the time to do that demo with the Yelp salesperson? The good news is we’ve got the answers because we’ve either done it or are currently doing it. If there’s a service promising to produce leads, we’re in that demo trying it out – so you don’t have to.

We admit, as much as we like doling out advice and sharing experience, we love receiving it from our clients, colleagues and mentors even more. Each time we participate in a coaching session, we learn something new. Sure, we can claim years of experience in communications, marketing, digital strategy, etc., but we don’t claim to be the experts in everything. If a client comes to us and we don’t have the tools to help them, we have an amazing network of specialists to fit their needs and budget that can. That’s what it’s all about, helping make digital communications easier for clients. We might not be the perfect solution all of the time, but we’re damn sure that if we are not, we can connect our customers with the people who are.

And speaking of goals … our priority in coaching sessions is to identify what your goals are. Because we’re a small business, you work directly with us. Not a salesperson or a customer rep who has a dozen other clients to pitch to that day. And no matter where you are or what your schedule dictates, we can connect via video conference, phone, email or in person. And as research junkies, we actually like doing the grunt work. We are passionate about finding the answers, working through the issues, and providing our clients with the right solutions.

Ultimately, coaching – whether it’s in sports or life or career – isn’t about simply handing someone the answers or regurgitating best practices, it’s about establishing a mutually beneficial relationship that results in success. It’s about connecting, sharing and arming our clients with the tools to take their business to the next level, either on their own or with us by their side.
